HWJC - Bringing It All Together (Bot9 #180)

After a long and fruitful journey towards becoming Well Coached, Justin meets up with Craig again for a final opportunity to learn in this season of his life. The men draw out a plan for bringing Justin's journey to life with his coaching staff so it can impact his coaching immediately: “Alignment means that your actions line up with your beliefs. It’s one thing to believe in Love, Discipline, Grace, and Forgiveness, and it’s another thing entirely to align those beliefs with your actions. I believe this is where people fail as witnesses to our Lord – their actions don’t line up with what they believe. In order to make a belief real, others need to see your actions making the belief come to life. That’s alignment,” Craig said.

Justin reflected for a minute and said, “You know, I see what you are saying. I remember when Tony Dungy’s son died and how he continued to share the Gospel even in the face of that immense tragedy.”

“That’s right,” Craig said. “We all saw that on the national scale, but seeing it in the day-to-day in our own lives is where we can take that lesson. We have to align our words with our actions. And now, while you might believe all of these things from your journey, your job is to align your actions first, and then align your coaches around those same beliefs to achieve alignment for your players.”

Justin thought for a second and realized that this revelation hadn’t occurred to him. He felt like he had yet another journey to travel in spite of just returning from another one. “Craig, I think I understand what you’re saying, but the light is just a speck at the end of a very long tunnel. I feel like this revelation is a light as bright as the sun to you.”

Craig smiled and kept engaging Justin. “Justin, it’s okay to admit what you don’t know. It allows clarity for both of us. I can help with this process, but it’s going to be up to you to tell me how much or how little you want me involved.”

“At this point,” Justin said, “I’m going to need all the help I can get.”

Craig said, “Let’s start with this – your team needs a mantra or a motto. It’s a saying that captures who you are, what your program is trying to accomplish, all while living under your school’s mission and vision. Let’s get the coaches together and start to develop alignment with those words. It will allow you to get their immediate buy-in as they contribute their ideas.”

Justin replied, “But shouldn’t I set that vision as the leader?”

Craig replied with grace, “That’s one way to do it. But, you need to multiply yourself around your vision. You don’t have the time for each of your coaches to go and see all that you have seen. In order to multiply yourself around your vision, let’s get their thoughts together. Trust me – you’ll see a whole different level of commitment from your coaches if we do this well.”
